This error condition has the following derived sub error conditions.

EXISTING_SCHEMA

Cannot remove column mapping from table '<tableName>' because its existing schema contains invalid column names: <invalidColumnNames>.

First rename or remove these columns in the table definition and successfully refresh the table while keeping column mapping enabled.

Then disable column mapping in a subsequent update.

The requested schema for table '<tableName>' is incompatible with column mapping mode '<requestedColumnMappingMode>'.

Invalid column names: <invalidColumnNames>.

Rename these columns or use column mapping.
