SQL Workbench/J

To connect SQL Workbench/J to Databricks, follow these steps. They should also apply for other tools that support JDBC.

  1. Download and install SQL Workbench/J on your local computer: http://www.sql-workbench.net/downloads.html.

  2. Download a Hive JDBC driver with all dependencies.

  3. Launch SQL Workbench/J.

  4. Select File > Connect window.

  5. In the Select Connection Profile dialog, click Manage Drivers.

    1. In the Name field, type Hive JDBC.
    2. In the Library field, click the Select the JAR file(s) icon. Browse to the the directory where you downloaded the Hive JDBC driver JAR.
    3. Verify that the Classname field is populated and click OK.
  6. Click the Create a new connection profile Connection Profile Icon icon.

  7. Type a name for the profile.

  8. In the Driver field, select org.apache.hive.jdbc.HiveDriver.

  9. In the URL field, provide the JDBC connection URL.

  10. Enter your Databricks username and password and click Test. If the test is successful, click OK. You should now be able to write queries against Hive tables.
