Use Genie One on desktop

The Genie One desktop app is a native macOS app that allows you to access Genie One on your desktop. The desktop app has the same capabilities as the web experience plus desktop conveniences like window navigation controls, a dock badge for unread activity, and automatic updates.

The desktop app works alongside the Genie One web experience. You can ask data questions in natural language, work with your threads and documents, use Genie Agents and Unity Catalog tables, and run Databricks Apps.

Install the app​

Download the Genie One desktop app

After the download completes, open the installer (.dmg) and follow the prompts to install the app.

Sign in​

When you open the app, sign in one of two ways:

  • Select Log in to sign in with your Databricks credentials. The app shows an account selector, then a workspace selector, so you can choose which workspace to sign in to.
  • Select Enter workspace link, enter your workspace URL, and select Enter to sign in directly to that workspace.

Use Enter workspace link to sign in directly to a workspace when the standard Log in flow doesn't work for your account. This can happen when missing account single sign-on (SSO) or email verification prevent sign-in.

The desktop app does not yet support signing in with a passkey, PIN, or Touch ID. To sign in, use a username and password or a YubiKey.

The app remembers your workspace, so later launches take you straight back to Genie One. Signing out clears your session in the app.

Differences between the desktop app and the web experience​

The desktop app runs the same Genie One as the browser, with a few desktop-specific behaviors:

  • A title bar at the top of the window provides Back, Forward, and Reload controls for moving through Genie One.
  • The app shows a badge on its dock icon with the number of threads that have unread messages. To clear the badge, click the dock icon with the right mouse button and select Clear notifications, or sign out.
  • Links to Genie One pages open in the app. Links to other parts of the Databricks workspace, such as settings, SQL, jobs, or compute, and links to sites outside Databricks, open in your default browser.
  • The app keeps itself up to date, downloading new versions in the background.
  • The app's interface follows your operating system's language setting.

Limitations​

  • The desktop app is available on macOS only.
  • Databricks does not provide an admin control to enable, disable, or restrict the desktop app for your organization. The app is another way to access Genie One, and access is managed the same way as other clients, such as through your organization's mobile device management (MDM).
  • Signing out clears your session in the app, but your workspace session remains valid until it expires.
